Newcastle United legend Shearer, who holds the Premier League’s all-time individual goals record, praised Hwang Hee-chan’s performance but criticized the officiating.
Hwang scored the equalizer in Wolverhampton’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle in the 10th round of the 2023-24 Premier League at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton, England, on Sept. 29. It was Hwang’s sixth league goal of the season, making him the first Wolverhampton player in history to score in six consecutive home games.
In the 26th minute at Newcastle, Hwang found himself on the right side of the penalty area after a pass from teammate Gomes, and after evading a tackle from Newcastle defender Dan Byrne with a deft ball-touch, he rattled the net with a left-footed shot.
Hwang Hee-chan showed off his goal-scoring prowess against Newcastle, but was also victimized by a questionable call from the referee. In the 45th minute of the match, Hwang and Newcastle’s Cher battled for the ball in the penalty area, and after Cher was brought down, the referee awarded a penalty kick. Hwang Hee-chan, who was trying to clear the ball, stopped before colliding with Cher, so there was no collision, but the referee called a foul on Hwang Hee-chan. Local media outlets such as the UK’s Daily Star criticized the referee’s decision, saying, “The penalty kick was called after Hwang’s foul, which increased fans’ dissatisfaction with the video assistant referee (VAR).
On the 30th, Shearer told British media outlet Newcastle World, “I didn’t think it was a penalty. I can understand the referee calling a penalty on the field, but I’ve watched the replay several times and I don’t understand why it wasn’t overturned. If it had happened to me, I would have been angry,” he said, indicating that it was a mistake.
Shearer also praised Hwang’s performance against Newcastle. “As the game progressed, I became concerned about the pace and ability of the Wolverhampton forwards, Hwang, Neto and Cunha. Wolverhampton were a threat and Hwang scored his sixth goal of the season. He beat Dan Byrne and produced a fantastic finish.” 안전놀이터
“It was a strange feeling,” Hwang said of the penalty decision after the Newcastle game. I felt so sad after conceding the penalty. It’s difficult to talk about the penalty situation after the game, but I tried to kick the ball away. But when I was about to kick the ball, I saw that someone was blocking me, after which I stopped moving and thought that the opponent touched me. I don’t know exactly, but I don’t think it was a penalty. The referee awarded the penalty and I wanted to do something for the team,” he said. “After halftime, my teammates came to me and showed me that they trusted me. They came to me and said, ‘You can do it. You have to keep going. Everyone believed in me and I felt so good and I really wanted to accomplish something,” he added.
While Hwang has continued his goal-scoring streak at the start of the season with his brilliant performance against Newcastle, there has been criticism in the United Kingdom of the referee’s decision to award a penalty kick for a foul on Hwang.
