The gym was silent. Something bad had happened to Hyundai Mobis guard Son Seong-jin.
The Ulsan Hyundai Mobis lost 88-99 on the road against the Goyang Sono in the 2023-2024 regular season at the Goyang Sono Arena on Nov. 29. The loss ended a three-game winning streak to open the season and dropped the Hyundai Mobis from first to second place.
The loss was even more devastating for Hyundai Mobis. Starting guard Son Seong-jin suffered an untimely injury. About two minutes into the second quarter, Signe Jin landed on his left foot after a breakaway and took an impact to his left knee. He let out a lone scream, and the gym went silent.
Hyundai Mobis trainers immediately checked his condition. A serious injury was detected, and he was immediately carried off on a stretcher. He did not return to the court afterward. A Hyundai Mobis official said of Signe-Jin, “His knee made a ‘pop’ sound. He limped to the hospital.”
Son was selected by Hyundai Mobis with the third overall pick in the 2018 rookie draft as a high school graduate. He was criticized for his ups and downs in his debut, but he has steadily grown in playing time. Last season, he played in every game for the first time in his career, averaging a career-high 10.2 points and 1.5 three-pointers. This season, he’s averaging 5.8 points in 19 minutes and 50 seconds in four games.
After struggling with his conditioning in the offseason after being cut from the 3×3 National Team, Signe has been gradually improving since the start of the season. If all goes well, he will be eligible for free agency for the first time in his career. Sigung-jin and Hyundai Mobis were hit with a bad start to the season. 굿모닝토토
