South Korea’s leading mixed martial artist, “Korean Zombie” Chung Chan Sung (36), knew he was going to lose, but instead of raising his guard, he chose to charge.
After taking multiple takedowns and squeezing out the last of his energy, he charged at Max Holloway (31-USA), but a counter punch was waiting for him.
Despite being knocked down by Holloway’s punches, Chung lived up to his nickname as the “Korean Zombie” and extended his fists one last time, but was unable to reach Holloway, who stepped back as he sensed victory.
Chung was defeated by Holloway via third-round TKO in the main event featherweight bout at UFC Fight Night: Holloway vs. Korean Zombie on Nov. 27 at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
“I’m done,” Chung said in a shaky voice as he was handed a microphone after the fight.
It was the moment the fists of “Zombie” stopped pounding after 16 years in the sport since he entered the mixed martial arts scene in 2007.
“The reason I’m quitting is (I’m) a championship kind of guy. I thought I could beat Holloway. I prepared without any regrets,” he said with a shaky voice, adding, “I didn’t fight to be third, fourth, or fifth. I fought to be a champion, and when I couldn’t beat the top guy, I thought it was time to call it quits.”
The gloves were removed and placed in the octagon, where an emotional Chung shook his shoulders and couldn’t stand up for a while.
After saying, “I’m done,” he immediately said, “I thought I was going to cry, but I don’t have any tears,” and then broke down in tears as he was overcome with emotion.
After exiting the ring to the sound of his signature song, “Zombie” by The Cranberries, Chung put his arm around his wife’s shoulders and walked out of the Octagon to a huge ovation from the crowd.
Chung is the only Korean fighter to ever win a championship. And twice.
In 2013, he challenged Joze Aldo (BRA) before falling to his knees due to injury, and last year he lost to Alexander Volkanovski (AUS).
Volkanovski is the dominant force in the UFC’s featherweight division today, having beaten Chan Sung Jung and now Holloway.
After being helplessly defeated by Volkanovski, Chung was so frustrated that he threatened to retire, but he rose to the challenge of Holloway.
Ultimately, he was unable to withstand Holloway’s punches and fell to the cold Octagon floor, but it was a fitting end for the UFC’s top featherweight contender.
Chan Sung Jung ended his mixed martial arts career with a second straight UFC loss.
His opponents were featherweight champion Volkanovski and No. 1 featherweight contender Holloway.
The winner, Holloway, showed his undying respect for Chung. 먹튀검증
He asked for a handshake after the first round, and after the fight ended with a third-round TKO, he personally helped Chung to a chair.
“He’s a legend, a mystery,” Hollaway said. I was lucky that my punch went in first (at the moment of the KO),” Hollaway said.
